What To Do Before Moving Into Your New Property

Moving into a new house is an exciting and daunting task. You may look forward to having a place you can call your own, and decorate as you pleased. But before all the designing happens, there are a couple of things you need to get sorted out and what to do before moving in into your liveable property.

Finalize Move-In Clearance & Sign Contracts

Most real estate developers have Move-In Clearance for all homeowners before they are allowed to move into their property. This is to make sure that the unit has been checked by the engineer, electrician, plumber, and etc. This is a form that is given to the homeowner and will be handed to security guard/office before they are allowed to move in and use their units. Make sure to double check move-in clearance & contracts are already signed ready before moving in. That way you won’t have any problems with security when you finally move into your new home.

Renovate/Design the Home When Needed

Most real estate properties come in a uniformed look when turned over. Some properties come with or with a coat of paint in the walls, or a bare cement floor that needs tiling. The homeowner knows the status of the unit prior to the turnover because it is stipulated on the contract, and on any marketing materials. You can, however, have your place painted, tiled, have built-in cabinets done, or anything you want to make the place looks pretty as long as it is within building contract. Do this before your scheduled move-in date so carpenters can have a big empty area to work in the space with.

Check To See If Your Electricity & Water Has Been Connected

When you move house, you need to discuss electricity and water billing with you the real estate developer. You may need to apply for electricity and water connection in your own name. It’s important to do this just before you move in so that you will have electricity, and water supply when you’re scheduled to move in. Living in a new house without electricity and water supply can be very frustrating and inconvenient so save yourself the stress and book in early.

Have Your Internet & Phone Service Connected

Call and visit the internet provider and check if their service is available in their area. If it is, you may need to book in advance for them to do a house visit and install necessary wirings. Depending on your need, you may do this as soon as able.

Change The Locks When Needed

Although this is not always the case be aware that there are several copies of keys for your unit. The real estate developers main office and security office may have one in case a homeowner lost his/her own set of keys. However, this may also be a problem having several keys around, and the security in the area has some lapses. Better change the doorknobs sets and locks and make sure to leave extra copies with our parents or siblings should you lose your copy.

Change Your Mailing Address Where Needed

Update your address and mailing details with relevant businesses – this includes banks, service providers, and etc. It’s best to do this as early possible, so you don’t have to rely on the new tenants of your old home to forward your mail. Notify the post office immediately of your new address and then contact businesses and government bodies individually and promptly to make sure your mail is going to the correct place.
