What Makes Dumaguete City the Best Place to Retire in the PHL for 2019

The Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA), a government agency under the Department of Tourism mandated to develop and promote the Philippines as a retirement haven, has named Dumaguete City as the best place to retire in the Philippines.  The 3rd class city in the province of Negros Oriental is the first city in the Visayas to have been awarded the Best Retirement Area Deemed as Retiree-Friendly (RADAR), besting its neighbors Cebu and Bacolod.

What makes this city attractive to retirees?

Dumaguete

One of the Most Livable Cities

Streets

With a number of good hospitals, branches of national banks, shopping centers, restaurants, coffee shops, nature parks and other things to do, Dumaguete City is definitely a great place where one can enjoy the convenience of urban development in a laid-back, chill rural setting. There is access to stable internet, cable TV, and telecommunications in the City.

Cost of Living

The Philippines is generally attractive to retiring foreigners because of the low cost of living. With a monthly rent of around $200 and utilities of around $75 to $100 (if you run your air conditioner a lot!), a $2,500 monthly pension allows expats to live like kings here.

Health Care

@Paunayan

Dumaguete has plenty of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and fresh seafood available in public markets. There are also a lot of restaurants serving healthy dishes. The availability of healthy food, the abundance of nature, and sports and recreation options in the City make it easy to live a healthy lifestyle here.

There are also several tertiary and public hospitals in Dumaguete that can cater to your medical and health needs. It is home to Silliman University Medical Center, which has various facilities such as medical laboratory, surgery rooms, and pediatric ward. There is also Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital, a public hospital that offers state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

Climate

Dumaguete City’s climate is mostly hot and humid, and the area is usually protected against most typhoons. It is pretty much summer all year!

Friendliness of Locals

I Love Dumaguete

Dumaguete is nicknamed “The City of Gentle People,” and for a good reason. The people are genuinely friendly and smiling. Almost everyone here speaks English too, eager to have a pleasant chat with visitors to their lovely city.
